Uganda, Kampala: Backing for solar company

Establishing highly trained partners

Uganda’s energy provision is inadequate, its utility grids and power stations are outdated and inefficient. Yet the country offers outstanding conditions for photovoltaic-based energy provision. This is where the training initiative “Develop Solar!” came in, which took place in Uganda’s capital city Kampala in August 2009. For one week, five leading German solar companies, including Centrosolar AG, trained 60 participants from Ugandan solar firms, industry and the banking and finance sector. Partners of the project were the German Solar Industry Association (BSW-Solar), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ: German Society for Technical Collaboration) and the Renewable Energies Export Initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).

The aim of the training was to enhance the technical and commercial expertise of the Ugandan solar companies and to establish skilled, highly trained partners on the ground. The training course was followed by a six-month mentoring period, during which the German firms supported their Ugandan partners in project development and implementation. In addition, the German companies donated three solar systems to Makerere University, where the training took place. The course was extremely well received both on the German and the Ugandan side. “One thing’s for sure: we will be coming back,” said Frank Heise from Centrosolar, who led the German company delegation.
